Invigorating Public Service for Change
Do
you know the way to
This
year’s theme, Invigorating Public Service for Change, reflects not only a trend
in public administration, but also the movement of the country itself. Our
nation faces daunting short and long term challenges in restoring economic
growth, financing costs of the baby boom retirement, providing more cost
effective health care, reducing global warming and repairing a shattered
infrastructure. The nation is now turning to the public sector to resolve these
problems and expects public officials and private partners alike to both ease
financing problems in the short term while building a more sustainable future
for the next generations. Over 200 public service experts will be on hand to
cover creative solutions encountered in the workplace. Through keynote
presentations, SuperSessions, workshops, panels, roundtable discussions and
poster presentations, attendees will experience first-hand leadership skills to
elevate the public service profession. Programming will reflect ASPA’s broad
mission and diverse membership.

Closing Plenary Session
The
closing plenary will be held on Tuesday, April 13 and will discuss “Fiscal
Challenges Confronting Cities”. A panel
of mayors will examine city fiscal conditions, the responses being undertaken
by local leaders, and the implications for national economic recovery. The low
point for city revenues may still be 18-24 months away and local officials
anticipate that the next year or two will bring large-scale city government
layoffs, deep cuts to local government services, and halted or delayed capital
projects. While the economy appears to
be in the later stages of the downturn, or on a slow path to recovery,

RWJF Public Health Law Research Program
Calls for Proposals
The
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) Public Health Law Research (PHLR)
Program calls for proposals (CFP) for studies that will examine the public
health impacts of laws and legal practices, including innovative policy and legal approaches, and laws and
regulations developed at the city or county level.
The
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) seeks to build the evidence for and
strengthen the use of regulatory, legal and policy solutions to improve public
health. RWJF is equally interested in identifying and ameliorating laws and legal
practices that unintentionally harm health. As public health practitioners,
policy-makers and others consider how laws influence the public’s health, they
need evidence to inform questions such as: How does law influence health and
health behavior? Which laws have the greatest impact? Can current laws be made
more effective through better enforcement, or do they require amendment? The
purpose of RWJF’s Public Health Law Research program is to answer such
questions by building a field of research and practice in public health law.
Up to
$3.5 million is available in this round of funding. Short-term studies will be funded up to
$150,000 each for up to 18 months. Complex studies will be funded up to
$450,000 each for up to 30 months.
While
PHLR funds studies that mainly focus on the intersection between law and public
health, researchers from other disciplines, such as medicine, economics,
sociology, psychology, and public policy and administration are encouraged to
be part of multi-disciplinary teams of applicants.
The
deadline for submitting brief proposals is April 14, 2010. For more information and to apply, visit the
website: http://www.rwjf.org/applications/solicited/cfp.jsp.
