Death of Former Chapter President

The Chapter sadly reports that former Chapter President Raymond Joseph passed away on March 14th.  Besides his work with our Chapter, Mr. Joseph served on the National ASPA Council and on the executive board of ASPA’s Conference of Minority Public Administrators (COMPA).  He had chaired both the Chapter Development Committee and the Pride Steering Group.  Mr. Joseph was a career manager at the City of New York Department of Education.

Results That Matter

Former chapter president Paul Epstein is lead author of the new book Results That Matter: Improving Communities by Engaging Citizens, Measuring Performance, and Getting Things Done (Jossey-Bass, 2006).

Results That Matter and the new website www.resultsthatmatter.net present a new “Effective Community Governance Model” that emphasizes how performance measurement and citizen engagement can be used together to foster continual community improvement.

The book (available at http://www.josseybass.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0787960586.html) features case studies from across the country that illustrate how governments and nonprofit organizations measure and improve performance, engage citizens in decision and planning processes, and use both “managing for results” and “governing for results” cycles to achieve results that matter most to the people of the community.

In October 2005, Paul and co-author Lyle Wray presented the model and related ideas from the book and website to the chapter.  Paul Coates of Iowa State University is the third co-author, with contributions by David Swain, formerly of the Jacksonville Community Council Inc.
